X - What does it mean to you?

X has taken on many meanings in our culture. In contemplating some of those meanings, I decided to focus on two that come most often to my mind.

X can serve as shorthand for KISS

I often see the X followed by an O meaning "hug". I love to see those at the bottom of a letter I've received.

During the month of December, I sometimes see a shorthand version of the word "Christmas" written as Xmas. I disliked seeing it until I read that the X was a symbol for the cross turned sideways. Whether or not the person who wrote it knows about this "cross" definition, I have decided to read it that way.

What do you think of first when you see the letter X?

  1. Somewhere I read a long post on the X in Xmas. The Greek alphabet and I do not know what else, basically this X actually stands for Christ.
This was very original of you for this letter.

    1. Retha, thanks for stopping by and for defining the X as Christ. The X in Greek can be similar to a hard C in English which would be the first sound in the word "Christ". This is a very acceptable shorthand as far as I'm concerned. Secular people who use the word "Xmas" for Christmas probably don't think about the origin of the X, but we can read Christ in it nonetheless.
