Over the years my husband and I have taken many memorable vacations to areas of the country from Maine to Louisianna. Most of our trip destinations, however, are in the Great Lakes area.
Here are a few photos of Upper Peninsula views from our 2011 trip.
Here's Fred and our dogs, Rio and Babe, on the sandy shoreline of Grand Marais, Michigan, a gorgeous little harbor on the Lake Superior shoreline between Sault Ste. Marie and Munising.
This is Lake Fanny Hooe at sunrise in Copper Harbor on the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula of the U.P. This lake is in the campground where we stay on our trips to Copper Harbor.
Here's a tiny little falls, Manganese Falls, about a half mile from our campground. It flowed nicely in 2011 but had dried up to barely a trickle in 2012.
This is the Sault Ste. Marie River near the location of the locks where ships make their way out of Lake Superior.

Vacation! I have so many strange stories about ours but I think my favorite was the trip we took to St. George's Island in Florida. I'm wondering now if I liked it so much because there were 3 floors in that house and we had 3 boys. Mom got some quiet time. :)

Diana,
DeleteThanks for stopping by to reminisce about a vacation! This is a good time of year to think about Florida and warmth since we're at about 20 degrees here in the U.P.
Those are great pictures, Donna. They make me want to take another trip north, just not right now. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ginger. You'd have to love snow and cold to come here at this time of year. The photos were taken in late September, one of our favorite U.P. tour times. Leaves turn beautiful then.
DeleteVacation or any type of travel is almost what my family and I are made of. "when the wheels turn we are in"
ReplyDeleteTruly there is no one vacation that was better or worse than the other. Every one of them we did not want to end. We like the sea, mountains, dessert, savannah. We try to not go to cities or shops when we are on vacation, only that one has to still eat.
Thanks for stopping by, Retha. We avoid cities if at all possible, too. Sometimes we end up in them because of a writers conference but that's business combined with the pleasure of staying at a rural campground in our motor home.
DeleteI live on the southern tip of Lake Michigan. Hubby and I love to explore the lakes from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, to Michigan, into Ohio. There is so much to see around them! Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Loree. The lakes offer a wide variety of bays, islands, peninsulas, and simply grand shoreline vistas. I'm sure we'll continue to explore the Great Lakes for many years to come.

I've been to all of the eastern states, and all states south of Michigan down through Florida. Out of all those places Maine is my favorite; however, being a life-time resident of Western Michigan my heart lies in all of the breath-taking places in my home state. Michigan has it all, from gorgeous sandy beaches all around to the rocky coast of Lake Superior, from big city Detroit in the lower peninsula to small-town "Garden" in the upper peninsula, with the Big Mac Bridge the connection from one peninsula to the other. I'd rather be anywhere in Michigan at any time of the year. It's gorgeous here all four seasons, even up where Donna lives! I could stand on the overlook near Arcadia in the lower peninsula and stair down the sand dunes and out into Lake Michigan for a far as the eye can see, or take a boat tour through Pictured Rocks up on Lake Superior. A trip out to ghost-town Fayette is a site to behold! No matter where we go there is a natural beauty that keeps me centered here in this Great Lakes State of Michigan! I'm hoping to run into you, Donna, hopefully at some point next summer. In the meantime, stay warm up there!
ReplyDeleteHey, Nancee, thanks for weighing in here on your favorite vacation spots! We've been to Maine, too. Very interesting! Especially for Fred because his paternal grandmother had relatives who hailed from Eddington, Maine, five miles outside of Bangor. We visited the grave there and saw where Fred's ancestor, Colonel Jonathan Eddy (for whom the town was named), was buried beneath a tall monument.
DeleteAs for us, we travel mostly in Michigan and for the first many years of our marriage we did not leave the state except for visits to my family in Western New York State. I just couldn't budge Fred to go farther. Then, when he realized he'd better be a willing traveler or get left home, he took me on three trips to New England where we brushed up on Colonial America for his history teaching.
So many trips and memories and thankfully, some photos and postcards to remind us we really did visit all those wonderful places both within and beyond Michigan!
